More about Tokuda Meiboku
A Legacy Carved in Wood
High in the wooded hills of Nara Prefecture, home to the ancient Tōdaiji Temple and its famously friendly deer, Tokuda Meiboku carries forward a quiet legacy in fine wood.
Since the late Edo Period (1603–1868), the company has been rooted in the field of Japanese wood, beginning with traditional forestry before moving into the careful selection, preparation, and handling of precious wood.
Indeed, the name Tokuda Meiboku (徳田銘木) means “precious woods of Tokuda” and reflects the deep respect they hold for every log and grain.
Over the decades, the company has developed an expertise in identifying wood with exceptional qualities, from its durability and natural sheen to its unique patterns and fragrance.
This process is also reflected in the collection presented by Tsukushi, where each Tokuda Meiboku piece, whether a bowl, tray, or wooden flower vase, begins with a slow and deliberate process, ensuring that the inherent character of the fine wood remains intact.
Today, under the leadership of Hirohisa Tokuda, Tokuda Meiboku continues to source and prepare precious wood with the same dedication that has defined its work for over a century, maintaining an unwavering respect for nature and the traditions of Japanese wood.
The Essence of Fine Wood From Japan
Tokuda Meiboku carries forward a tradition rooted in the field of fine wood, where the work shapes not only form, but feeling.
Each piece begins with carefully chosen Japanese wood such as hinoki cypress or Japanese magnolia, valued for its texture, fragrance, and distinctive character.
Guided by a deep understanding of wood’s nature, Tokuda’s skilled craftsmen combine time-honored methods with a refined contemporary approach.
Every wooden bowl, wooden plate, and sake cup is brought to life through a deliberate process of hand-finishing and precise shaping, honoring the grain while introducing modern lines.
These are creations with presence, designed for those who value quality, simplicity, and a thoughtful connection to nature, whether in the form of wooden tableware or decorative accents for the home.
Each piece reflects heritage, expertise, and a quiet dedication to making things that endure.
The Quiet Luxury of Wood
Choosing wooden tableware isn’t just about how it looks. It’s about how it feels in your hand.
Wood is naturally warm, light, and grounding; it encourages a slower pace.
Its grain carries texture, its scent is gentle, and each piece brings a quiet presence that ceramic or metal often lacks.
Tokuda Meiboku works with carefully selected native woods such as hinoki cypress, Japanese magnolia, and other prized varieties like Japanese umbrella pine (Kōyamaki), katsura tree, and Japanese elm (Keyaki), chosen for their beauty and character.
Whether it’s a small wooden vase, a serving bowl, or a set of wood charger plates, every item is shaped with the intention to bring comfort and balance to the table.
This attention to feel, how something rests in your hand, how it shapes the atmosphere of a meal, is what turns these objects into something more than tools.
They become part of the experience.
