Cultural Notes

Owan and Shiru Wan

In Japan, this type of wooden bowl is traditionally called owan (お椀 ) or shiruwan (汁椀 ), terms typically used for soup bowls.
Although not strictly limited to soup, wood bowls like Kodama are most often associated with serving warm broths or miso soup, thanks to the way wood naturally insulates heat while remaining gentle to the touch.

Featured Focus

Spirit of the Wood

Honoring the Soul Within the Tree

In Japanese, Kodama (木霊) means both “echo” and “tree spirit”, a presence believed to inhabit ancient forests.
Deeply rooted in Shinto beliefs, where nature is sacred and alive, this wooden bowl reflects a quiet reverence for wood as more than material, something with soul.
In Japan, wood is treated with deep respect, not only for its beauty, but because it is believed to carry memory and spirit. Kodama honors this philosophy in both name and form.
