Exclusivity Note: Each Mizuho bowl is handcrafted individually, and fired in an anagama kiln so slight variations in shape, texture and color are a natural part of the piece.

Shaped on the rokuro wheel by artisan Hitoshi Minagawa at Tsuchinoko Kiln in Shigaraki, Shiga, each Mizuho rice bowl measures 120 mm wide and 54 mm deep, sized for a generous daily serving.

The surface carries no glaze at all. Its color comes solely from anagama yakishime firing, nearly a week inside a pine-fueled wood kiln above 1200°C. Ash settles and fuses into the clay on its own path, so no two bowls from one firing ever look alike.

Flame and ash leave streaks of umber, copper and ash-grey across the body, and the unglazed foot stays coarse under the fingers, proof of raw fire meeting Shigaraki clay. Wabi-sabi asymmetry, not factory precision.

A Landscape Written by Fire
The Mizuho surface owes nothing to glaze. Its umber, copper and ash-grey tones come directly from Shigaraki clay meeting flame inside an anagama kiln, the wood-fired technique tied to Shigaraki's standing among Japan's Six Ancient Kilns.
This yakishime finish reflects the wabi-sabi appreciation for what fire and time create on their own, without a single brushstroke.
Simplicity Rooted in Heritage
Mizuho (瑞穂) means abundant ears of rice, a fitting name for a bowl built around the rice table. Minagawa-san shaped it around one idea: let anagama firing carry that heritage to an everyday meal.
There is no glaze, only clay turned on the rokuro wheel and finished entirely by fire and ash. Used daily for rice, or for small bites and ice cream, each bowl carries this quiet history to the table.

The Artist

Born in Shigaraki in 1959, Hitoshi Minagawa studied ceramics at the Aichi Prefectural Vocational Training School of Ceramics and the Advanced Ceramics Course at Gifu Prefectural Tajimi Technical High School. In Tajimi, he trained under Osamu Suzuki, a ceramic artist designated as a Living National Treasure.

Minakawa san began making pottery in Shigaraki in 1988 and is now the ceramic artist leading Tsuchinoko Kiln. He creates traditional Shigaraki tea ware and tableware, firing each handmade piece in an anagama with pine wood. Over approximately one week, flame and natural ash form individual colors, textures, and firing marks on the clay.

He has held annual solo exhibitions in Akiruno, Tokyo, since 1990, as well as exhibitions in Ikebukuro, Kyoto, Fukuoka, Hiroshima, and Tokyo. His work continues the kiln tradition established by his father while defining Tsuchinoko Kiln today.
