Hand-thrown by artist Taro Kojima at Nunobiki Kiln in Shiga, Japan, the Hanagumo matcha bowl measures 4.7" wide and 3.0" tall (120 × 77 mm).

The exterior is finished in Nanasai Tenmoku, a glaze painting technique developed by Kojima-san himself: kiln-transformed glazes of deep transparency and varied color, rendering a sakura tree directly onto the clay.

Slight variations at the rim and foot are the marks of a hand, not a mold. A singular object, shaped once and unrepeatable.

The wide opening gives the chasen room to move. Intended for whisked matcha at home. Hand wash only.

Blossom Haze in Glaze
The name Hanagumo, 花曇, refers to the overcast sky of sakura season in Japan: a soft, luminous haze that diffuses light through cherry blossoms in full bloom.
Kojima-san rendered that atmosphere directly onto the clay. Cool, speckled tones recede into the background as painted branches reach across the surface, blossom clusters dissolving at their edges. The effect is not decorative. It is a landscape held in glaze.
This quality of natural variation, where fire and material arrive at something unplanned, sits at the heart of the Nanasai Tenmoku tradition and the wabi-sabi sensibility it draws from.
A Refined Unboxing Experience
The Hanagumo matcha bowl (matchawan 抹茶碗) is presented in a traditional Tomobako (共箱), a paulownia wood box historically associated with significant handcrafted works in Japan. The lid bears the artisan's handwritten inscription and the seal of Nunobiki Kiln, affirming both origin and authenticity. The box is not packaging.
Beyond protection, it marks the transfer of something made with intention, from the hands that shaped it to the hands that will use it.

Maintenance

No Harsh Appliances: Keep away from the oven, microwave, and dishwasher.
Gentle Cleaning: Rinse with warm water and a small amount of mild soap, using a soft sponge. Dry immediately with a soft cloth.
Preservation Over Time: Avoid sudden temperature changes and do not leave liquids sitting inside for extended periods. With steady care, the glaze will mature and deepen, adding richness to the bowl's natural character.

Born in 1940 in Miyagi Prefecture, Taro Kojima trained in Kyoto and Shigaraki before establishing Nunobiki Kiln in Higashiomi, Shiga Prefecture, near Lake Biwa. There, working with Shigaraki clay valued for its coarse texture and response to fire, he and his family made monozukuri a daily practice.

In the 1970s, Kojima-san developed Nanasai Tenmoku (七彩天目): kiln-transformed glazes of deep transparency and varied color, capable of rendering natural imagery directly onto clay.

Each piece is guided by the artist and completed by the kiln. No two works are identical.
