Shaped by hand at Nunobiki Kiln in Shiga, Japan, each Gofuku owl figurine is the work of master potter Kazuhiro Kojima, standing 1.6" tall (40 mm) and small enough to rest comfortably in a palm.

The ceramic body is finished in Nanasai Tenmoku, a glaze that transforms through kiln firing: natural patterns and luminous color emerge from the heat, settling differently on every piece.

No two figurines carry the same surface. Subtle shifts in tone appear unpredictably across teal, plum, sandy gold, and moss green, each one a quiet imprint of fire and craft.

A Glaze Born from Fire
The Nanasai Tenmoku (七彩天目)finish on each Gofuku figurine is never fully predictable. As the kiln reaches temperature, natural patterns surface through the glaze, bringing depth and color that no hand could place deliberately.
This unpredictability is not a flaw. It is the essence of the craft, a reflection of the wabi-sabi understanding that beauty is made richer by the marks of time and process.
Five Owls, Five Fortunes
In Japanese, the kanji 五福 (Gofuku) means five fortunes, a traditional concept representing health, longevity, wealth, virtue, and a peaceful life. Yet in spoken Japanese, 五福 shares its sound with 五フク, five owls, a gentle wordplay that gives this set its deeper meaning.
Each figurine is more than an ornament. Together, the five carry the full blessing of the name. Placed individually around a home, they quietly spread that fortune from room to room.

Kazuhiro Kojima, born in 1972, is a ceramic artist and second-generation master of Nunobiki Kiln in Higashiomi, Shiga Prefecture. He grew up with clay and fire as constants, shaped by the work his father Taro Kojima had built from the ground up.

After art college, he returned to Nunobiki and trained alongside his father, gradually developing an artistic voice entirely his own.

His defining work is the Fukuro Owl, glazed in Nanasai Tenmoku, a technique that layers seven finishes by hand. His owl sculptures range from small decorative pieces to large public installations, placed in hospitals, institutions, and streetscapes across Japan.
