The Artist

Naoki Kajihara

  • Location: Seki, Gifu Prefecture, Japan
  • Technique: Woodturning
  • Signature: Quiet, hand-turned woodwork

Naoki Kajihara handcrafts wood tableware in Seki, Gifu Prefecture, a region known for its deep artisanal heritage.
Working alone, he shapes each bowl, sake cup, and plate slowly on the lathe, blending precise woodturning with traditional Japanese aesthetics. Kajihara uses locally sourced cherry, Japanese magnolia, and Japanese elm, letting the grain and warmth of each wood guide the final form.

His pieces draw from the timeless elegance of Japanese dinnerware, favoring quiet, considered curves over ornament. Rather than fast craft, Kajihara's work is a living tradition — objects made with intention, meant to be used slowly and appreciated over time.

Cultural Notes

The Role of the Plate in Japanese Dining

In traditional Japanese dining, the plate is not merely a surface, it frames the meal, guiding the eye and supporting the harmony between food, season, and presentation.
Unlike Western table settings, where plates are often large and uniform, Japanese wooden plates like Yamazakura are chosen with purpose: for what they hold, how they feel, and how they echo nature’s quiet simplicity.
As part of refined Japanese tableware, Yamazakura brings this sensibility to your table—a way of presenting not just food, but care, balance, and a sense of place.

Featured Focus

Sakura, Before It Was Tamed

Born Where the Forest Is Still Quiet

The name Yamazakura (山桜) combines the kanji for “mountain” (山) and “cherry blossom” (桜), referring to the wild cherry trees that bloom in remote hillsides across Japan.
Unlike cultivated sakura, Yamazakura grows unshaped by human hands, symbolizing quiet strength, impermanence, and natural grace.
