In the heart of Kyoto, master potter Taichi Kawai founded Usurai Pottery, a studio where emotion and material meet.
A graduate of the Kyoto Institute of Traditional Crafts, Kawai-san refined his skills in Shigaraki before developing his signature crackle glaze, known in Japan as kannyū (貫入), a traditional ceramic crazing technique that forms delicate lines beneath the surface, like frozen water beginning to melt.

The surface is finished with a fine crackle glaze, known in Japan as kannyū (貫入): a natural network of lines formed during cooling. This elegant detail is known as ceramic crazing, or craquele in Europe.
