Cultural Notes

Chawan: More Than Just a Bowl

In Japan, rice bowls are often referred to as chawan (茶碗), a term that originally meant "tea bowl."
The word combines the kanji for "tea" (茶) and "bowl" (碗), but in modern usage, it typically refers to the small bowls used for enjoying rice. This shift in meaning reflects how deeply chawan are woven into daily life in Japan, so much so that a word once associated with tea has become synonymous with everyday dining.

That original connection to tea, however, still remains.
A specific type of chawan, known as the matcha chawan (抹茶茶碗), also simply called matchawan (抹茶碗), is designed for preparing and drinking matcha (抹茶), the finely powdered green tea used in traditional tea ceremonies and now popular around the world.
Compared to the chawan used for rice, these bowls are deeper and wider to accommodate the delicate whisking process done with a chasen (茶筅), a handcrafted bamboo tea whisk.
