What You Use Matters

You Deserve a Cutting Board Made With Care

Let’s be clear: what you bring into your kitchen matters.
You can choose a plastic board; cheap, disposable, and known to release microplastics. Or a glued-together wooden board, mass-produced and full of hidden seams.
But your kitchen deserves better. A true Manaita, carved from a single slab of Hinoki wood, is naturally safe, free from toxins, and trusted as an antibacterial cutting board that’s gentle on your knives.
You cook for the people you love, so every surface you touch should reflect that care.
You deserve something lasting, something safe and beautiful.
And so do they.

From Forest to Kitchen, with Care

Handcrafted in the Hills of Nara

In the forested hills of Nara Prefecture, where deer wander near the ancient Tōdaiji Temple, Tokuda Meiboku has long cultivated a quiet mastery of fine wood.
In Japanese the company name means “precious woods of Tokuda”, as they supply exceptional wood for design, architecture, and refined interior decor.
Their deep reverence for material extends to every Manaita, carved from a single piece of Hinoki wood and shaped to honor both nature and daily ritual.
What results is not just a cutting board, but a gesture of calm, care, and enduring beauty.

Cultural Notes

More Than a Cutting Board

The word Manaita (俎板) once referred to an offering board, used in rituals to prepare mana, “true” food like fish and vegetables.
Rooted in reverence, these early boards were thick, hand-carved, and sometimes raised like altars.
As early as the Nara Period, cutting boards were classified by purpose, each reflecting etiquette and care.
Today, while the form has evolved, the spirit remains: a solid, glue-free surface that honors food preparation. In Japan, a Manaita is more than a tool, it’s a partner in the kitchen, chosen with the same care as a fine knife.

Each Manaita begins as a single piece of Hinoki wood, selected for its purity and grain.
It’s not pressed, glued, or rushed, just shaped by hand, patiently, until the surface feels as calm as it looks. A simple object, perhaps, but one that carries the quiet dignity of craft and care.

Featured Focus

Why Manaita Means More Than Cutting

A natural wood cutting board rooted in purpose and tradition

Manaita (俎板) is the Japanese word for cutting board, but in a traditional kitchen, it carries more meaning than its Western counterpart. It’s not just where food is prepared, it’s a space of intention, respect, and care.
Rooted in Japan’s culinary culture, a manaita is often made from Hinoki wood, prized not only for its functionality but also for the sensory calm it brings to the cooking ritual: the soft resistance of the blade, the clean scent of the cypress, the warm texture under your hands. Every cut feels deliberate.
Choosing a Japanese cutting board is about slowing down and doing things well.
It honors the knife, the ingredients, and the one who prepares the meal. That’s why chefs and home cooks alike treat it not just as a tool, but as a trusted companion in the kitchen.
