The Hachiryo cup set features two handmade octagonal cups, each shaped using the traditional tebineri technique by master potter Hitoshi Minagawa at Tsuchinoko Kiln in Shigaraki, Japan.

Made from local clay, the cups are fired for about one week in an anagama kiln above 1200°C, where pine ash and flame create an unglazed yakishime finish that can never be reproduced exactly.

Each cup measures approx. 3.1" wide × 3.5" high (80 × 90 mm), with a 9.1 fl oz (270 ml) capacity.
The octagonal form retains subtle asymmetry from the hand-building process, while brown, beige, ochre, and ash tones reveal the effects of heat, flame, and natural ash. Each cup carries its own quiet expression of wabi-sabi.

Made primarily for tea, Hachiryo is equally suited to coffee and herbal infusions. Hand wash only.

Tebineri: Formed Without the Wheel
Each Hachiryō cup is shaped through tebineri (手捻り), a traditional hand-building method that uses no potter’s wheel. Hitoshi Minagawa forms and adjusts the clay directly by hand, creating the eight-sided profile while preserving slight shifts in line and symmetry that make the making process visible.
Anagama Yakishime: Shigaraki by Fire
The cups are fired for about one week in an anagama kiln (穴窯) above 1200°C. In the Shigaraki ware (信楽焼) tradition, pine flame and natural ash act directly on the clay to create an unglazed yakishime (焼締め) surface. Ash deposits, heat, and flame produce a different landscape (景色, keshiki) on every cup, making each firing impossible to reproduce exactly.
The Name Hachiryo
Hachiryo (八稜) takes its name from the cup’s distinctive eight-sided form. 八 means “eight,” while 稜 refers to a ridge or defined edge, a simple name that reflects the geometry created through hand shaping.

Maintenance

Appliances: Microwave safe. Dishwasher use is not advised; hand washing is preferred to protect the handmade form and surface.
Gentle Cleaning: Wash with warm water, mild soap, and a soft sponge, then dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.
Preservation Over Time: Avoid sudden temperature changes and do not leave liquids inside for long periods.

With simple care, the Shigaraki clay and firing marks will mature naturally through use.

The Artist

Hitoshi Minagawa

Born in Shigaraki in 1959, Hitoshi Minagawa studied ceramics at the Aichi Prefectural Vocational Training School of Ceramics and the Advanced Ceramics Course at Gifu Prefectural Tajimi Technical High School. In Tajimi, he trained under Osamu Suzuki, a ceramic artist designated as a Living National Treasure.

Minakawa san began making pottery in Shigaraki in 1988 and is now the ceramic artist leading Tsuchinoko Kiln. He creates traditional Shigaraki tea ware and tableware, firing each handmade piece in an anagama with pine wood. Over approximately one week, flame and natural ash form individual colors, textures, and firing marks on the clay.

He has held annual solo exhibitions in Akiruno, Tokyo, since 1990, as well as exhibitions in Ikebukuro, Kyoto, Fukuoka, Hiroshima, and Tokyo. His work continues the kiln tradition established by his father while defining Tsuchinoko Kiln today.
