The Aonami is a waved serving bowl handcrafted by Taichi Kawai at Usurai Pottery, Kyoto, Japan. It measures 9.3" × 8.3" in width and length, with a depth of 3.1".
The form is asymmetric, with one side rising into a tapered point and the other sweeping low, shaped to suggest a wave in motion.

The glaze technique used is kannyu, a Japanese method that produces a fine network of natural cracks across the ceramic surface during cooling. The same effect is known in Western ceramics as craquelé, or ceramic crazing. On this bowl, the crazing spreads across a deep teal and jade green ground, covering the entire surface.

Each firing produces a different fracture pattern. No two Aonami bowls carry the same surface. Suited for salads, pasta, and shared dishes. Dishwasher safe.

The Kannyu Glaze
Kannyu (貫入) is a Japanese ceramic technique that produces a fine network of cracks across the glaze surface during cooling. In Western ceramics, the same effect is called craquelé or ceramic crazing.
On the Aonami bowl, the kannyu pattern spreads across a deep teal and jade green ground, tracing the wave form of the piece.
Near the foot of the bowl, the glaze drips and pools naturally before stopping, a mark left by gravity and fire. This detail is different on every piece and cannot be replicated.
This is wabi-sabi expressed in ceramic form: the acceptance of imperfection and transience as the source of beauty. No two Aonami bowls are identical. The crazing, the drips, the pooling at the base: each one belongs to a single firing, and to a single owner.
Aonami, 碧波
The name Aonami is written in Japanese as 碧波.
The character 碧 means blue-green, the color of deep water or jade stone. The character 波 means wave.
Together, they describe both the form and the glaze of this piece: a bowl shaped like a wave, finished in the color of the sea. The name was chosen as a direct expression of what the object is.

Kyoto-born Taichi Kawai studied ceramics at the Kyoto Institute of Traditional Crafts, then refined his practice in Shigaraki, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, before founding Usurai Pottery (陶房薄氷) in Kyoto.

His work has been shown in multiple national solo exhibitions.At Usurai, he works with Hyōretsu Kannyū Yū (氷裂貫入釉), a rare glaze that forms a delicate web of translucent lines across the surface, like ice beginning to fracture. This is ceramic crazing in its most considered form.

"I want my pottery to be used every day," he says, "but I also want it to stop you for a moment. Depending on the light, each piece glows differently. Look closely."
