In Japanese culture, the term chawan (茶碗) is commonly used to describe rice bowls, though its original meaning was “tea bowl.”
Made up of the characters for “tea” (茶) and “bowl” (碗), the word has evolved over time. Today, chawan most often refers to the compact bowls traditionally used for eating rice, reflecting their central place in Japanese dining rituals. What once referred to a tea vessel has become a symbol of everyday meals.

Yet the connection to tea remains an important part of its heritage.
A specific variation called the matcha chawan (抹茶茶碗), or simply matchawan (抹茶碗), is crafted specifically for preparing and enjoying matcha (抹茶), the bright green powdered tea used in Japanese tea ceremonies and beloved worldwide.
