Maruju Pottery

Maruju developed a recognisable approach to Shigaraki pottery by combining functional forms with a lighter and more contemporary visual language.

Its plates, bowls, and cups retain the subtle irregularities associated with handmade ceramics, while their balanced proportions make them easy to use in everyday settings.

The result is pottery that feels approachable and modern without losing the character of traditional craft.

The Turquoise Signature

Maruju’s most distinctive feature is its radiant turquoise glaze, which gives the collection an unexpected freshness.

The colour shifts subtly across each surface, gathering more deeply around edges, curves, and natural variations in the clay.

These changes ensure that no two pieces appear entirely identical. The contrast between vivid turquoise, earthy material, and simple functional forms gives Maruju pottery its unmistakable character.

Maruju, Rooted in Shigaraki

Maruju stands in Shigaraki, a small town in Shiga Prefecture and one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns.

Centuries of inherited techniques and generations of skilled artisans have made pottery a living part of the region’s identity.

Maruju was selected for its ability to combine the deep roots of Shigaraki pottery with a brighter, more contemporary visual language.

Rather than representing Shigaraki ware in its most traditional form, these pieces reveal how an established craft can continue to evolve through colour, design, and everyday use.
